We managed to get into New Bern this week. The town is a disaster. It is very sad to see. The hotel/marina is months from getting back to any sense of normalcy. The community leaders and facilities managers are doing a yeoman's job considering the situation. #NewBernStrong
There are a lot of people down in Eastern North Carolina that are in a lot of need. Please help where you can!
Our home survived basically unscathed. It was a complete shock to us after seeing the video from Bridgepointe. We have a lot of work to do to clean the dirt, leaves, and trash from everything and then put all of our preparation work back the way it was. There was an incredible amount of floating debris, dock pieces, and trees wedged up under the boat and the marina dock.
We are very fortunate and grateful. As an analysis, we can attribute the low impact to several things. Primarily, it was our location in the marina and the marina orientation and buildings relative to the track of the storm and winds. In the image below, SCOUT is shown with a red 'X' and the general wind direction of the storm indicated.
One can see that the brunt of the wind was borne by the associated marina hotel buildings. In addition, the 150+ boats and docks out in front of the dock we were on served as "attenuators" of a lot of the wave action. I will NEVER AGAIN complain about being in the hot, smelly (protected) corner of the marina!!!
Secondarily, we spent a lot of time with prep work that helped. We spent two full days of clearing all the decks, tying down the mast, dinghy and outboard, doubling and tripling all dock lines, adding chafe protection, taping and double taping all windows, hatch and door cracks, and locking down any interior movable items.
We are now beginning the work to restore our home to normal as the temperature and humidity allows, as we will not have power to run the air conditioning for a month or more....
